"Bluebeard" Week 5 - William Marshall - Parallax Scrolling and Hazards

Image
Disclaimer - This week I suffered from severe illness and focused on other projects. This will be less substantial than the previous weeks. "Bluebeard" - William Marshall Week 5 - Parallax Scrolling and Improvements Intro I was struck down with a late-winter cold that often meant I wasn't able to leave my bed. However, the work that follows is work that I managed to complete in-between working on 3 other Uni projects and trying to sleep off the illness. This week, I wanted to focus on the Parallax Scrolling visuals as I really enjoyed experimenting with the new style last time. I also managed to add some spikes in the form of hazards, which was done in a few minutes by simply making a few strokes in Photoshop. Parallax Scrolling Implementation Parallax Scrolling was created by using various layers and different images from Photoshop which were then layered on top of eachother using Dan's Scrolling Script. Using the plans which I developed last wee...

"Bluebeard" Week 4 - William Marshall - Level Design Creation and Experimentation

"Bluebeard" - William Marshall Week 4 - Level Design Creation and Experimentation Intro A lot of experimenting and changes to the overall style were implemented this week. After being reminded that I was almost halfway through my deadline, I decided to force myself to work on something that I hadn't thought about before now - my art style.  Since I would never consider myself to be a particularly impressive 2D artist, it was incredibly important that my art style was simple and easy to re-create across a wide variety of assets, so I could maintain consistency whilst also making my assets look the way they should. As I mentioned last week - I had considered 3D assets, but due to time constraints, I have decided to drop that idea entirely and focus on 2D assets. It will also provide me with a decent challenge, giving me the opportunity to practice and experiment with 2D properly. Level Select Screen My level select screen was something that I had been...

"Bluebeard" Week 3 - William Marshall - Pickups and Level Design

Image
"Bluebeard" - William Marshall Week 3 - Level Designs and Pickups Intro This week continued my Design Phase, where sketches and ideas are being experimented with in order to have a fully thought-out background before I begin developing fully-finished assets, to make a nice strong supporting structure and developed ideas. There was one interesting development this week that I will talk about later in this blog - a game with 3D assets being produced in the 2D perspective. This would fulfil the requirements of the game whilst drawing upon my 3D ability. However, it would increase the amount of time I would need to complete my product, which I am already strapped for time for. Hazards & Pickups One of the key requirements for my game is to have hazards and pickups which will (presumably) be able to decrease and increase the player's health, providing more challenge for the game. These were sketched out this week to see what I wanted to go with. Task 1...
